Food Truck Hopping

Today, my bestie and I decided to hop on the shuttle and go to Farragut Square in DC for some Food Truck hopping. This was my first time at Farruget Square and I loved it. If you’ve been to DC, you know how the weather always plays a major role in any outdoor activity. Luckily, it was gorgeous out! We had to make a few minor seating adjustments by running away from the sun and hiding under those enormous trees.

Once we got there, a few of the vendors were still setting up; therefore, we decided to take a walk around the Square and check out what everyone had to offer. There were more than ten food trucks in that area. After observing all those trucks, we made a decision!

We chose two trucks: Far East Taco Grille and Korengy Bibimbap.

We had: Chicken, Pork, and Steak Tacos with variety of toppings. We took the owner’s advice with what goes well with each protein. It turned out to be delicious and perfect!

We got the Beef Bibimbap with the works. Just perfect!

I can tell you that we made the perfect decision. Both meals were amazing! The Tacos were spot on and the Bibimbap was so fresh and perfectly made. This is definitely one of the many times I am planning on visiting the Farragut Square. If you are ever in the DC area, do yourself a favor and stop by those food trucks.. Hey, you might find me there!

Well, we couldn’t leave without having a little bit of Froyo!

Happy it is Friday tomorrow!

Becoming an IOC?

The more I browse and read online about health, the more I realize we are surrounded by hazardous ingredients. Ingredients in the food we consume, the soap we use to cleanse our skin, and in my case, the makeup I use. I have never been oblivious about those ingredients, but I have been always lazy to do my own research and find out more information about his sensitive topic. However, I need to make this change. I need to increase my knowledge and educate myself. If I want to be healthy, then all aspects of my life style have to change. However, this is not going to happen overnight!

I will take you with me in this journey. My goal is to educate myself about a certain harmful ingredient every week. I want to know what it is, how it is used, what’s its consequences, where and in what is it used, and which products do not contain it.

This week, even though we are in the middle of the week already, I stumbled upon the chemical SLS – Sodium Laurel Sulfate. It is a chemical used in many products. To mention a few, it is used in car washes, food, children body washes, soap, cleansers, facial treatments, and tooth paste. Basically, it is an inexpensive effective foamer. It is used to produce that foam we see when we wash our faces and scrub our bodies.

If you feel that washing your face is making your skin dry, or that shampooing is giving you an itchy scalp or making your eyes sting, or that cleaning your teeth is giving you mouth ulcers, stop and check out the label. SLS is responsible for irritating the skin. One other effect of SLS is improper eye development in children as it affect protein structures in their eyes and keeps them from developing properly!

These are some serious issues associated with that ingredient. I have visited and read a few articles and some argue against all these allegations. Their argument is that SLS is in contact with the skin for a few seconds and then it is rinsed. If it got inside the eyes, it should be rinsed thoroughly. They argue that those few seconds of contact wont hurt. But the question I ask, is the foam worth it? Is it worth the risk of consuming products that contain SLS? My answer is no, not in my household.

I will be going home tonight to check the labels around my house. Now, it wont be economically friendly to my wallet to throw all those products I find; however, I will be paying extra caution while using them, and once they are empty, they will not be purchased ever again!

On my way to becoming and IOC– informed Organic Consumer.

I love Mondays!
Everyone starts their work week on that day, except me. So I decided to start this day with a delicious breakfast.
Plate breakdown:
1 egg fluffed with olives.
Half of an avocado sprinkled with salt and lemon peppers.
2 mini potatoes topped with cheddar cheese and scallions from TJs.
A slice of home made bread, made by my momma, topped with light cream cheese and TJs olive tapenade spread.

I hope everyone is having a great Monday!

One of my absolute favorite grocery stores is Trader Joe’s. I love that store. Every time I shop there, I end up purchasing new favorites. I always go back, buy our favorites plus new items to try. Soon, I will dedicate a whole post to our TJ’s favorites, but for now I want to share this new favorite: the Freeze Dried Strawberries. These babies are unsweetened and unsulfured, they are low in sugar and carbs, and contain fiber. They make a perfect snack and can be used with yogurt and on top of your cereal. I love them because they aren’t too sweet, actually, they are a bit soury lemony sweet. My perfect combo!

I love you Trader Joe’s!

Lemon Diet?

Seriously though, who doesn’t love lemons? I am one of those people who adds lemon on everything!
I love lemon in my tea, lots of lemon on my soup, on my salads, on cucumbers as snacks, in my water, and on my proteins. I can never get enough lemons! Besides the fact that it adds such a great flavor to the food I eat, it has many health benefits.

Did you know that introducing lemons to you diet with help with your digestion? It actually helps the body regulate its metabolism, lower the sugar absorption in you stomach, and increases the absorption of calcium which gets stored in your fat cells and later burns the fat. All this is due to the lemon’s acidity content and richness in vitamin C.

All you have to do is add lemon to your current diet, squeeze a few drops over your tea and salads, add it to your marinades and sauces, and finally enhance your flavors and health!
So, please bring on the Lemons. I want more!
